Laser

Low level laser therapy is used by physios to reduce pain and facilitate tissue healing. The photons of light emitted by the laser are absorbed by the cells and converted to energy which drives the healing process.

Laser therapy is widely used in the treatment of chronic pain, e.g. osteoarthritis and nerve pain. Because it speeds up the healing process it is used to treat a variety of acute injuries including ligament sprains and muscle strains as well as conditions such as tendonitis. It is also useful in the treatment of skin conditions such as diabetic ulcers and scars.

Effects of laser:

  • Decreases pain, including neural pain
  • Increases energy production within cells which speeds up healing
  • Stimulated collagen formation. Collagen is one of the building blocks of muscles, tendons and ligaments.
  • Improves lymphatic drainage which decreases swelling.
  • Improves circulation which leads to improved oxygen delivery and removal of waste products.
  • Promotes scar formation and wound healing.
